graduated from Cal Poly San Luis
Obispo. Moved to Colorado in 1986 to
race and train. Broke my collar bone
and separated, my shoulder which
ended that season. Moved to Jackson
Hole, Wy. to be a ski bum and ride.
Found out what it was like to constantly
get last place in Women's 50 mile road
races out in the middle of no where.
Came back to California in 1988 (to
visit) where I met my husband at a bike
shop. He immediately assessed my
strengths (and weaknesses) on a bike
and we headed to the Velodrome for
track racing. I eventually won several
district championships on the track in
1990, 1991 and 1992. My favorite
events on the track were the Kilo,
Sprints, and point races. In 1991 I was
invited to compete in the Olymic festival
which pitted the best track racers in the
nation against each other to form teams
from the North, South, East and West.
The experience was probably one of the
highlights of my racing career. In late
1991 I broke my hip (cross country
skiing), but was still able to qualify for
the Olympic Trials in several events on
the track. I did lose my sponsorship
that year, but went out and got my own.
I ended up placing seventeenth in the
nation (with not my fastest time). That
same year at Master's Nationals (30-34
age group), I placed 3rd in the KIlo, 5th
in the points race, and 5th in the 40
kilometer time trial with a time of 59
min, First time ever breaking an hour.
Those are just a few highlights of my
racing experiences. From 1982 to 1993
I raced in too many races to count. I
can remember in the late 80's and early
90's racing Friday nights at Dominguez
Hills, Saturday morning criterium in L.A.
Saturday night at Encino, and Sunday
again in the L.a. area. I would do this
for several weeks in a row, and having
the time of my life. In 1994 I had my
first child, and worked full time. It was
very difficult to train and race. I did
race again in 1995, but that was short
lived when I had another child in 1996.
I took several years off the bike, and
started riding again in 2001. Since my
husband all but boycotted road riding, I
thought if you can't beat'em join'em. I
did and I've never regretted it. The
Team Dirty Work Group has taught me
how to have fun again on the bike.
Track racing, and criteriums came so
much easier to me. I've never worked
so hard, and had so much fun on the
bike. I've since raced at Rim Nordic
where I've won several first and second
places in the old lady divsion 40+,
Fontana Winter series overal Champ in
the sport category and had a blast on
two 24 hour teams at Hurkey Creek. | | Comments | I do enjoy racing, but not necessarily
the winning. It's the process along the
way, and the friends you meet. Some of
the best cyclists in the nation I've met
are the friendliest, and some of the,
well for sake of argument not so good
cyclists are some of the most
unfriendly. I still say it's better to have
tried and failed than not to have tried at
all! So I'm going to keep on try'n, and
enjow myself along the way. I hope you
come along for the ride. |
